We’re a little ashamed of our heritage. But we had very little to do with it.

When we started trading in salt we found North America.
This time we come in peace.
In the beginning of the 11th century, Leif Eriksson and his crew were the first non-native Americans to set foot in what is now known as L’Ance aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. The Vikings were great traders who traveled to far countries buying and selling trade_map1_smallgoods, and yes, there was some looting on the way. They acquired silver, wheat, cloth, wine, gold and pottery from all over the European continent and as far away as the Silk Road near Baghdad.

One of the most valuable assets was salt, a mineral that not only tasted good but was essential for preserving food during the long winter. Since then, the Swedes have been expert tradesmen in salt with a keen eye for its different qualities and textures. When Falksalt was founded in 1830, Sweden was no longer a nation of militant people. Instead, they invented separators and propellers, constructed telephone switchboards, manufactured ball bearings and glass. Swedish craftsmanship demands functional, healthy, and practical design for a reasonable price.

This has lead to the concept of Swedish design stretching over various industries including fashion, home décor, graphic design, architecture and food. Today, Swedishtrade_map_viking_small chefs are considered to be among the best in the world. This has had a spillover effect on Swedish consumers who are nowadays spoiled with gourmet restaurants on every corner in the big cities and exotic ingredients at every supermarket.

Although Swedish consumers are embracing what is modern, new, and inspirational, they still know their salt. All varieties of salt from many different manufacturers can be found in Sweden, but Falksalt is the number one brand among both consumers and professionals. At FalkSalt, we are proud of this 180-year trust that has been built, and we continue to manufacture new products and textures to feed the customer’s curiosity. We believe that we have been, and will continue to be, successful because our focus is on salt and salt only. Our products are manufactured carefully and with great pride with constant measure of raw material, processes, and the end result. However, the best evaluator is the spontaneous shout from any of our customers that scream, “This Tastes Good!”
